This is our super fast 7 question interview with Curious Labs the developer of Smoosh Lab! *Please feel free to leave a comment down below if you have an idea for a future question!
How did you get into game development?
I really enjoyed tinkering with games beyond the standard player experience. I started out making Half-Life 2 mods in my early days. Shortly after that, I started making Flash browser games. It was an easy way to get started at the time. I actually didn’t enjoy coding at first, in fact, I never thought it would end up being my career! I loved the challenge and puzzle-solving that coding brought to my life.
What software do you use to make your games?
We mainly work in Unity. Its such an excellent multi-platform tool, especially for Mobile. Over the years we’ve figured out most of the engine’s quirks and have developed tools to speed up our workflow. Now we can focus on the fun stuff, making great games for our audience!
What hardware do you use to make your games?
We work on an Apple/Mac ecosystem at the office. It’s just more convenient if you’re developing mobile apps for iOS since we require their tools to compile our games. I actually didn’t use a Mac before starting work here, so it took some time to adjust. I ended up really liking them!
If you could choose only one “item” that makes development easier what would it be?
Definitely my headphones, when I want to really zone in and crank out some code!
Name one quote that motivates your development!
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…
Any books (or guides) you would recommend to new game developers?
I actually haven’t read a book about development in my lifetime! I’ve learned using online resources, Unity has excellent documentation and tons of examples all over the web.
Lastly, your advice to new game developers!
Always be working on passion projects on your own. It keeps you sharp and shows initiative. This is especially true if you are in school. It shows that you really enjoy what you do if you try and improve yourself on your own time.
