Ready? GO!

How did you get into game development?

Previously I was an Electrical Engineer working for a large corporation. However, I wanted to find a path where I could be my own boss and was deeply curious about how games where made. After trying my hand at a few basic projects, I found I enjoyed the process and was good at it. I was also in a position where I could take the risk. With this, I fully committed myself to the process and successfully published my first game on Android and iOS. My second thrilling game is in development.

What software do you use to make your games?

When I was just getting started I used Android Studio, later I switched to Unity, which I still use today. If I had to do it over I would just start with Unity, because it’s faster and more targeted to game development.

What hardware do you use to make your games?

I use an HP laptop and a MacBook Air. For testing, I use 3 different generation iPhones and 6 or 7 Android phones which are low-end to mid-range.

If you could choose only one “item” that makes development easier what would it be?

I enjoy the freedom of working on a laptop, which allows me to work almost anywhere.

Name one quote that motivates your development!

“Be not afraid of growing slowly; Be afraid only of standing still.” Making progress of some kind is really important to me, even if the progress is slow. Building my dream of becoming a game developer has taken several years, it didn’t happen overnight, it took great dedication and focus. At no time did I ever stand still or give up.

Any books (or guides) you would recommend to new game developers?

YouTube is a surprisingly helpful resource for learning how to develop games. Udemy also has many classes.

Unity and Reddit forums are also great resources for asking questions and learning from more experienced developers. Chances are someone else has had the problem you are facing and searching these forums one can often find insightful answers.

I also found the book Holistic Mobile Game Development with Unity great for learning the basics. Unity also has some solid basic tutorials.

Lastly, your advice to new game developers!

Success in game development is elusive, if you want to succeed, you must be completely relentless, creative and single-minded. It’s an incredibly competitive and demanding field. To make a game that really stands out in the market and succeeds one must have the ability to marry engineering with art and anticipate what players want.

Study hard and always look for ways to improve your areas of weakness. Don’t be afraid of constructive criticism, feedback is essential to creating your best game.
