So tell us, how did you get into game development?

Hello, I’m Vijesh Viswambaran from India and it started way back in 2002 when I first interacted with a computer game called “Soldier of Fortune”. Slowly it generated curiosity inside me to know how games are developed. Programming was my main priority so I took a Computer Science course. After graduation, I got my first job in a Gaming Studio. Later on, I did my Masters in Game Programming and worked for various studios. Now as an Indie I have started my own studio “Freakout Games”

What kind of software do you use to make your games?

I always try to interact with as many software as possible which can help improve my productivity.

Game Engine: Unity
Coding: Visual Studio, Notepad+
Art: Gimp, Blender
Marketing: Canva, Animaker, Fraps
Audio: Audacity

There are many other tools like Evernote, Slack etc which I use for project management.

What sort of hardware do you use to make your games?

Primary hardware is my Windows Desktop with dual monitor. I also use Macbook Pro for iOS porting and work.

Mobile Devices: Android tabs and phones. For iOS I use iPad-mini

If you could choose only one “item” that makes development easier what would it be?

I would say it’s “Internet”. Everything is so easily accessible right now that even by working remotely from a different geo-location a team can develop games. From various tools, tutorials, marketing service etc is now available to developers very cheaply. As an indie, I think “internet” has revolutionized the gaming industry.

Name one quote that motivates or inspires your game development!

“Try and fail, but don’t fail to try.”

This keeps me motivated, as I know been an indie I have to keep trying and learning from my mistakes. I know I have to be persistent and plan accordingly which will eventually lead me to success track 🙂

Are there any books (or guides) you would recommend to new game developers?

It would be difficult to refer to some specific books as I said earlier “internet” is now an encyclopedia of all information and resources. To any subjects or any aspect of subject ranging from programming, designing, art, marketing etc can be found on the internet.

I would definitely suggest browsing through various resources available in text and videos. There are so many active communities and discord groups for game development, so make use of it!

Lastly, your advice to new game developers!

If your an indie and doing full-time game development then you need to have patience and keep a proper balance between sustainability and expenditure. It’s easy to get frustrated as monetary return can be a tough task from initial releases. You just need to know your resources well and try to work in a group. For hobby developers – just keep working on projects and try to get it completed.

“Freakout Games” is always open to help and promote indies in all possible ways.
