This is our super fast 7 question interview with jeerayuthlee the developer of Ocean Escape! *Please feel free to leave a comment down below if you have an idea for a future question!
So tell us, how did you get into game development?
I was 15 years old when I first found out that “Anyone can code” online. Impressed by what coding can offer, I started taking online lessons from Khan Academy and also watching YouTube video before I stubble upon game development with Unity3D. Ever since then, I have been making video games. With computer programming, I get to turn the ideas that are stuck inside my head into reality and better yet, let people play it. To see people play my game, it just means the world to me.
What kind of software do you use to make your games?
I use Unity3D to make Ocean Escape as it is beginner friendly and it is free. Next, I use Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC to create the graphics for it as it is a 2D game. For the audio, I use Auxy, an iPhone app, which offers a wide variety of sound effects. Besides that, I find that the Asset Store of Unity is quite useful as there are quality assets to download and I used some for my game, Ocean Escape.
What sort of hardware do you use to make your games?
If you could choose only one “item” that makes development easier what would it be?
For me, it would be a graphics tablet. We can work on our graphics much easier and the end product would be much nicer. Drawing with a mouse is impossible!
Name one quote that motivates or inspires your game development!
I do not have a quote to share. However, my motivation comes from the compliments of people who played my games! A smile on their face is already enough to keep me going on my game development journey.
Are there any books (or guides) you would recommend to new game developers?
I don’t have any book to recommend as I don’t read much on game development. However, I find YouTube videos to be the most useful guides. There are tutorials on how to make a game and also videos on the top 10 games of the year. Channels like Mark Brown and Extra Credits offers a lot of good advice for game development.
Lastly, your advice to new game developers!
My advice would be not to rush the development process, focus on the quality and the game feel. Besides fun, a game must also feel complete. Things like user interface must not be neglected. Besides that, it is to find an attracting point in your game and work on it, so that you can maximize the chances of success for your game. The attracting point is what makes your game unique, different from other games in your market. For example, the attracting point of Ocean Escape is the characters!
